Robert Half
Just after New Year's Day, most IT professionals' social media feeds weren't flooded with red envelopes, but rather grabbed by the bizarre layoff explanations from various major companies. Many people are discussing: Has winter really come for IT professionals?
Change in the IT industry is continuous, with new disruptive technologies entering the market every year. In fact, even in those so-called best times, IT skills turnover has been the fastest—those who can't keep up are often transferred or eliminated. It's just that in recent years, due to various corporate and other issues, elimination rates have been rising, making this winter seem even colder.
While eliminating staff, many companies' IT departments are still striving to find more talent with new skills to meet enterprise transformation needs. So what new skills should you master to quickly adapt and ensure an invincible position in the 2020 IT job market?
A survey of North American IT hiring decision-makers, published in the "Robert Half 2020 Salary Guide," provides answers. I think it's worth referencing.
In the survey, 67% of IT managers said they want to expand their security, cloud computing, and business intelligence teams, with 89% of them saying it's difficult to successfully recruit for these roles. In emerging technology areas like artificial intelligence, machine learning, extended reality (XR), and blockchain, the talent gap is widening further, as these skills remain relatively rare in the talent pool.
Robert Half's report shows that more enterprises will embrace digital transformation in 2020 to "get closer to customers." To address skill shortages, besides hiring, North American companies commonly use another approach: training existing employees—a practice called "upskilling." "Your company likely already has qualified candidates who can keep up with the technical knowledge needed for company growth. Among respondents, 90% said they are upskilling, with the most common skills being cloud computing, security, project management, data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning."
2020 has arrived. Have you planned your professional skills roadmap?
